CU’s definition of “forcibly displaced” is inclusive of the millions of people who have been forced to leave their homes due to human, economic, and/or environmental insecurity.

Through our work, we have learned that terms such as "forcibly displaced individual," "newcomer," and "person with a migration background" are considered more appropriate vocabulary than the highly politicized term "refugee," and so we aim to acknowledge this contentious language and promote more thoughtful terminology. Furthermore, we believe that what is coined the "refugee crisis" actually reflects (and should be described as) an administrative or political crisis of a state handling the influx of new arrivals.
